We are thrilled to announce that Aberdeen High School and Belle Shivers Middle School have been proudly named Military Star Schools for 2023-2025. Now, our Aberdeen Elementary School has joined this prestigious list for 2024-2026. This recognition comes from the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE), which has identified 31 schools across the state as Military Star Schools for their exceptional commitment to supporting military families and children of service members.
The designation of Military Star School is not quickly earned. These schools must meet stringent criteria aimed at addressing the unique needs of military students and their families. Among these requirements are the appointment of dedicated school liaisons for military families, the provision of student-led transition services and peer support, ongoing professional development for staff to better understand and respond to the needs of military-connected students and families, and the public recognition of service members and their families.
This program was initiated by Gov. Tate Reeves in February 2022 through Executive Order 1561, positioning Mississippi among 31 states with a formal program to acknowledge schools that prioritize supporting military families. In 2023, 61 schools earned the prestigious Military Star School designation for 2023-2025.
The Military Star School program is a vital initiative aimed at assisting schools in addressing the educational and social-emotional challenges faced by military-connected children during their transitions between schools. It is designed to ensure that these students remain on track to succeed in college, the workforce, and life. The term "military-connected" encompasses children of service members serving on active duty and those in the National Guard and Reserves.
The designation as a Military Star School remains valid for two years, after which schools can reapply to maintain this esteemed recognition. Additionally, new schools are encouraged to apply for this designation in 2025.
